Winooski Farmers' Market
Running from June 9th to October 20th, the Winooski Farmers' Market takes place every Sunday from 10am to 2pm rain or shine. Set directly in front of the Champlain Mill along the banks of the Winooski River, the market is located in the heart of the downtown and offers Vermont’s finest local produce, farm goods, artisan crafts, local prepared foods, musical entertainment and an interactive and educational children’s program. Having grown two-fold since 2012, the Winooski Farmers' Market is a place of community growth and involvement, drawing together a diverse group of people to the market each week.
At the Winooski Farmers' Market, the number of unique, local, and handmade selections is bountiful. Alongside fresh, seasonal produce, vendors also offer homemade gluten-free breads and baked goods, snow cones flavored with syrups made from local berries, as well as herbal tinctures and natural bug sprays. Prepared foods incorporate flavors from diverse origins including those of Pak-Afghan and Somalian cuisines. Many crafts are available, including handmade ceramics, handspun mohair from local goats (as well as goat milk soap), wooden cutting boards and other housewares, as well as henna tattoos - a service popular amongst all age groups!
Also offered at the Winooski Farmers' Market is the POP (Power of Produce) Club booth, an educational program geared towards children 5-12 years of age. Launched at the Winooski Farmers Market at the beginning of the 2013 market season, POP Club aims to get kids excited about eating healthy and supporting the local community. How it works: children visit the POP Club booth, register, receive a Passport to Health (which the market holds onto for the season), receive $2 worth of market tokens to use to buy local, seasonal fruits, veggies, and their own starter plants, and other perks like a tote and button saying they are part of the Club. Each week they return to the market, children get a stamp in their passport and another $2 dollars worth of tokens. Each Sunday also offers a new activity for children of all ages to participate in focused on food, growing plants, and nutrition. Previous activities have included making worm composting bins, planting seeds, and painting colorful signs for the market for display around town.
In addition to POP Club, the Winooski Farmers' Market hosts weekly live performances by local musicians, a children’s festival in August, and an Octoberfest event during the last market day, complete with a German style Oompah band and a wide-range of specialty foods. This market offers EBT/Debit services and Harvest Health Coupons (while supplies last).
Swing by the Winooski Farmers' Market on Sundays this summer to enjoy the diverse offerings and beautiful location in the heart of the Winooski downtown!
